World Refugee Day

Last week it was the 20th time Poland has celebrated the holiday commemorating the strength, courage and determination of migrants around the world. In 2021, World Refugee Day was celebrated on Sunday, June 20.

World Refugee Day was established by the UN General Assembly on December 4, 2000 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, which recognized the international scope of refugee crises and the need for international cooperation and sharing of responsibility by states in this regard. It was created to raise awareness of the problems faced by those forced to leave their homes and countries as a result of wars, humanitarian crises or various persecutions.

On the issue of providing protection to migrants, the teaching of Pope Francis also remains relevant. In the message of Holy Father,  prepared for the 107th World Migrant and Refugee Day [September 26, 2021], the Pope called for building up a community.

“Once this health crisis passes, our worst response would be to plunge even more deeply into feverish consumerism and new forms of egotistic self-preservation. God willing, after all this, we will think no longer in terms of ‘them’ and ‘those’, but only ‘us’.”
